Fisheries

The Fisheries Department is in a co-management setting with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans under an Aboriginal Fisheries Strategy (AFS) agreement. Under this agreement, a work plan is followed that both the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) and the Tsilhqot’in National Government Chiefs have negotiated. All work plans within the agreement is under the direction of the Tsilhqot’in Chiefs, and there is no work initiated without the consent of the Chiefs.

The Fishery Program runs throughout the entire year, with most of the field projects running in conjunction with the annual salmon run. There is an average of seven projects throughout the year, and these projects employ approximately thirty individuals. With the projects running throughout the summer, when a high number of people are on holidays, gives the Fisheries Department an opportunity to hear concerns surrounding the Fisheries and other areas of Fisheries work, thus giving the opportunity to make changes or adjustments to the program.

At present, the Fisheries Department is in the process of preparing for the new fishing season. The Fisheries Department is renewing the projects for the 2007/2008 season. Starting in April, there will be workers at Chilko Lake working on the Salmon Smolt Project.
